Food & Drink

There is nothing better than the clean crisp fresh air of a good walk to build up the appetite by day or by night.  The hopes of a refreshing tipple to quench the thirst and hearty wholesome food to fill our bellies are always on the cards.  Coniston is all too happy to provide such needs for whenever you desire.  There are quaint compact cafes for your lunch time feed, especially when yet another flask of tomato soup just will not suffice.

You will find cake solace at the likes of The Bluebird, The Green Housekeeper, Meadowdore Rest, Sara’s, Swallows and Amazons Tearoom and Brantwood.  For the jolly public house vibe and the whisky warmth of the local brew, head to Black Bull Inn, The Yewdale Inn Rest or the Crown Inn.

How about making Friday Fish Night any night of the week at Our Plaice, where you can lick your ketchup smile and happily gorge upon the simple delight of salt and vinegar. For the more bistro-esque treat, slip into something more smart and casual than practically waterproofed.

Set off on an evening stroll down to Tilberthwaite Avenue and seek out the famous Steam Bistro. A perfect place to dine and take a break from the stove, as here you will find locally sourced ingredients within simple and relaxing surroundings.

Whatever tickles your fancy, follow your intrigued nose and put an end to those grumbling bellies.

Just a note to say we had a brilliant weekend your Holmthwaite was perfect for us. We had an age range from 5 months to 89 year and the layout of the house and facilities were ideal. Thanks for taking such a late booking it was well appreciated. Sandy also did a good job of the meet and greet!
I booked this holiday let for our village book club. There were a few of us but we slotted in nicely due to the size of the place. We loved the local museums and read and discussed the poems of John Ruskin. Loved the views from the rooms and the friendly Coniston folk. The pub grub was excellent, especially the Cumberland sausage. We hope to book next year.
The Hunts
We recommend this holiday home if you have a large party. We stayed with our walking group friends, as we hadn't tackled The Coniston Old Man, which we thoroughly enjoyed. A perfect base, practical and pretty.
